Nico’s blood counts continue to recover, and as they do his doctors slowly increase his chemo. This is a mixed bag. His bone marrow needs to stay suppressed for long-term success. So if we need to increase his chemo, we need to increase his chemo. But now we know that one of the drugs we are increasing is being metabolized to a substrate that hurts his liver (and has a less than desired therapeutic benefit for him). It could be our imagination, but when we increase the chemo doses, Nico’s mood really deteriorates. Those moments when it seems very apparent, I get really sad and angry. We are trying to keep our focus: temporary pain for long-term benefit.

There was a big discussion on the list serv about how “normally” kids in treatment actually live. This was a timely discussion because our extended family, out of concern and love for Nico, expressed a lot of worry about our decision to let Nico return to school. We have concerns too. But someone posted a quote that really hit me. Claudia, Dale’s sister, originally shared the quote.

“Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...It's about learning to dance in the rain.” – Vivian Greene

So, we are trying to learn how to dance in the rain rather than get angry at the weather.

Next clinic visit is in two weeks.  Love to all. Best light to you and yours.
